...Anglers, hunters, trappers, shooters, and all involved in outdoors pursuits know the rich resources Western New York offers. But mention some disease or viral anagram, and all seems ill. Not so for the two latest scare letters: CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) and VHS (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia).
The good news for the nearly past year of 2009: no reports of either in New York State.
CWD had been a scare some five or more years back, as various forms of mad cow disease were found around the Western world. "We haven't seen another case of CWD in New York in the past five years," DEC senior wildlife biologist Tim Spierto said while examining deer at the DEC Holland Check Station at the start of the 2009 gun season...
